Trim audio: cut a clip by start time and length
Cut an audio clip down to a specific start and duration.
To trim audio, upload a file, enter the start time in seconds and how many seconds you want to keep, then download the clip. The trimmer cuts one continuous section from the recording and saves it as an MP3, so you can remove a long intro, pull out a quote or shorten a voice memo. There is no waveform editor: you type the times, which makes the tool quick but means you need to know where to cut.
How to trim an audio file
Choose a file up to 50 MiB. Enter a start time in seconds (0 begins at the start) and a duration in seconds, at least 0.1. Decimals are accepted, for example 12.5. Submit the form and download the result, which is named after your file with -trimmed added. To keep a clip from 1:30 to 2:15, enter a start of 90 and a duration of 45.
What the output looks like
The clip is always re-encoded to MP3, whatever format you uploaded. That means a lossless WAV or FLAC loses some detail in the cut. If the duration runs past the end of the recording, you get everything from the start point to the end. There are no fade-in or fade-out options.
Cutting more than one section
The tool keeps a single section per run. To remove a middle part, trim the part before it and the part after it as two separate clips, then join them with Merge Audio. To cut a long recording into several pieces, run the tool once for each piece with a different start time.
Related audio tasks
Trimmed clips are small, but if you need an even smaller file use the Audio Compressor. If the trimmed clip is too quiet, run it through the Audio Normalizer. To keep another format instead of MP3, pass the clip to the Audio Converter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cut an MP3 file online?
Upload the MP3, enter the start time in seconds and the duration to keep, then submit. You download a new MP3 containing only that section. The original file is not modified.
Can I enter the time as minutes and seconds?
No. Times are entered as seconds only, with decimals allowed. Convert minutes first: 2 minutes 15 seconds is 135. A clip from 1:30 to 2:15 has a start of 90 and a duration of 45.
What format is the trimmed audio?
MP3, even if you upload WAV, FLAC, OGG, AAC or M4A. Cutting re-encodes the clip, so a lossless source loses some detail. Keep the original if you need full quality.
Can I remove a section from the middle of a recording?
Not in one step. Trim the part before the cut and the part after it as two clips, then join them with the Merge Audio tool. The result plays as one recording without the removed section.
What is the largest file I can trim?
Up to 50 MiB per file. Processing is also cancelled if it takes longer than three minutes. For larger recordings, compress the file first with the Audio Compressor and trim the smaller copy.
