Crop PDF margins on every page

Trim a fixed margin from every page of a PDF.

To crop PDF pages, upload the file and enter how many points to trim from the left, top, right and bottom edges. One point is 1/72 of an inch, so the default of 36 trims half an inch from each side. Each margin can be 0 to 300 points, and the same trim is applied to every page. The tool does not have a visual selection box, so you set the numbers by measurement.

How to crop a PDF

Choose a PDF up to 25 MiB and type a value for each side. Set a side to 0 to leave it alone. Submit the form and download the file, named after the original with -cropped added. Open it and look at the first and last pages before relying on it, since the same margins are used on every page.

Working out the numbers

Use 72 points per inch, or about 28 per centimetre. To remove a one-inch border from the top, enter 72 for the top margin and 0 elsewhere. A US letter page is 612 by 792 points and A4 is about 595 by 842, so margins that add up to more than the page width or height are refused with an error.

What cropping does and does not do

The tool sets the page's crop box, which controls the visible area in most viewers and printers. Content outside the crop box is hidden, but it is not described as deleted from the file, so cropping is not a way to permanently redact information. Use it to remove scanner borders or wide white margins, not to hide sensitive material.

Other ways to tidy pages

If scans are sideways, fix them first with Rotate PDF so the margin sides match what you expect. To change page order or remove blank pages, use Reorder / Delete PDF Pages. If cropped pages must still be readable on small screens, PDF to Images can turn them into pictures at your chosen DPI.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a PDF to remove white margins?

Enter the number of points to trim from each side. Start with 36 points, half an inch, and check the result. Raise or lower the values and run it again on the original until the margins look right.

What unit are the crop margins in?

Points, where 72 points equal one inch. You can enter 0 to 300 for each of the four sides. For centimetres, multiply by about 28, so 1 cm is roughly 28 points.

Can I crop only some pages?

No. The same margins apply to every page. If only certain pages need cropping, split them out with Split PDF, crop them, and merge the parts again with Merge PDF.

Does cropping permanently delete the cropped content?

Not necessarily. The tool changes the visible crop area of each page, and the hidden content may still be in the file. Do not rely on cropping to remove confidential information.

Why do I get an error that the margins are too large?

The margins you entered leave no visible page on at least one page, because the left and right or top and bottom trims add up to the full width or height. Lower the values and try again.
