Convert CSV to Excel (XLSX) without losing zeros

Preview delimited text and create an XLSX workbook while preserving text and leading zeros.

All CSV fields are stored as text, preserving leading zeros and preventing formula execution.

Preview the data before conversion.

To convert CSV to Excel, upload a .csv file, set its encoding and delimiter, check the preview and download an .xlsx workbook. Every value is written as text, so ZIP codes like 02134, product codes and long IDs keep their leading zeros and nothing starting with an equals sign is run as a formula. The trade-off is that numbers and dates arrive as text, so Excel will not sum them until you convert the columns.

How to convert a CSV to XLSX

Choose a .csv file up to 10 MiB, pick the text encoding and delimiter, and tick the box if the first row holds column headings. Submit, review the preview, which shows the first ten data rows and the row and column counts, then confirm to get the workbook. The file has one sheet called Data, and with a header row ticked the first row is frozen.

Encoding and delimiter settings

The delimiter can be a comma, semicolon or tab. The encoding can be UTF-8 with BOM, plain UTF-8 or Windows-1252. If accented letters or symbols look wrong in the preview, change the encoding. If everything appears in one column, change the delimiter. Many European exports use semicolons, and files from older Windows programs often use Windows-1252.

Everything is stored as text

Excel normally guesses types when opening a CSV, which strips leading zeros and turns some codes into dates or scientific notation. This tool skips that guessing, so values arrive exactly as written. Excel may show a green warning about numbers stored as text. Use Text to Columns or the convert-to-number option on those columns if you want to calculate with them.

Limits and file rules

A table can have up to 50,000 rows, 200 columns and 200,000 cells in total, and any field must stay within Excel's 32,767-character limit. Every row must have the same number of fields as the first. A ragged row, a malformed quote or a wrong encoding stops the conversion with an error. To go the other way, use Excel to CSV.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert CSV to Excel and keep leading zeros?

Upload the CSV with this tool. It stores every value as text, so a value like 007 stays 007. Opening the CSV directly in Excel would normally drop the zeros. Remember the values are text, not numbers.

Why does Excel say my numbers are stored as text?

Because the converter writes all CSV fields as text to protect zeros and prevent formulas from running. Select the column and use Excel's convert-to-number option or Text to Columns when you need to do calculations.

What CSV size and shape can I convert?

Up to 10 MiB, 50,000 rows, 200 columns and 200,000 cells. Each row needs the same number of fields. If your file is bigger, split it into several CSV files and convert each one.

My CSV opens in one column. What should I change?

Change the delimiter. Choose semicolon if your file comes from a European locale, or tab for tab-separated data. The preview updates when you resubmit, so you can confirm columns split correctly before downloading.

Are formulas in the CSV executed?

No. A field that begins with an equals sign is written into the workbook as plain text, not as a formula. That keeps untrusted CSV files from running formulas when you open the workbook.
