Convert Excel to CSV (one worksheet at a time)

Preview one XLSX worksheet and export its stored values as delimited text.

Leave blank to export only the first worksheet. Preview shows the selected worksheet.

Stored values are exported without Excel display formatting. Formula-like text is prefixed with an apostrophe for safety.

Preview the data before conversion.

To convert Excel to CSV, upload an .xlsx file, choose a worksheet name or leave it blank for the first sheet, set the delimiter and encoding, check the preview and download the .csv. A CSV holds one sheet only, so this tool exports a single worksheet, not the whole workbook. Values are exported as stored in the file, not as Excel displays them, so formatting such as currency symbols and date styles is not applied.

How to export an Excel sheet to CSV

Choose an .xlsx file up to 10 MiB. Type the worksheet name exactly as it appears on the tab, or leave it blank to export only the first worksheet. Pick a comma, semicolon or tab, and an encoding. Submit, check the ten-row preview and the sheet name it shows, then confirm to download. The CSV is named after your workbook.

Values, formulas and formatting

Formula cells export the result saved in the file. If a formula has no saved result, because the workbook was never recalculated, the conversion stops and asks you to open it in Excel and save it first. Display formatting is ignored, so a cell shown as 1,234.50 may export as 1234.5 and dates export in their stored form. Check numbers and dates in the preview.

Safety prefix on some cells

To stop spreadsheet programs from running a cell as a formula, any value that begins with an equals sign, plus, minus or at sign has an apostrophe added in front. That also affects negative numbers, which can export as '-5. If you plan to import the CSV into a database or script, strip those apostrophes or check the columns that may contain them.

Encoding, limits and unsupported files

UTF-8 with BOM opens correctly in Excel, plain UTF-8 suits most other software, and Windows-1252 fails if the text contains characters it cannot represent. Limits are 50,000 rows, 200 columns and 200,000 cells. Macro-enabled and password-protected workbooks are rejected. To go back to a workbook, use CSV to Excel.

Frequently asked questions

Does Excel to CSV export every worksheet?

No. A CSV file holds one table, so the tool exports one worksheet. Leave the name blank to get the first sheet, or type a sheet name to choose another. Run it again for each sheet you need.

Why do my dates and numbers look different in the CSV?

The tool exports the values stored in the file, not Excel's display formatting. Currency symbols, thousands separators and date styles are not applied. Check the preview, and format the data in the program that opens the CSV.

Why does my CSV have an apostrophe before some values?

Values starting with =, +, - or @ get a leading apostrophe so spreadsheet apps do not run them as formulas. This includes negative numbers. Remove the apostrophes if you are importing the file into software that reads numbers.

Which delimiter and encoding should I use?

Use a comma and UTF-8 with BOM for files you will open in Excel. Use a semicolon if your regional Excel expects it, and a tab for tab-separated imports. Choose UTF-8 if Windows-1252 reports unsupported characters.

Why does the converter reject my workbook?

Common reasons are a macro-enabled workbook, a password, a file over 10 MiB, more than 50,000 rows or 200 columns, a sheet name that does not match, or formulas with no saved result. Fix the file and try again.
