Edit or clear PDF metadata

Update a PDF's title, author, subject and keywords.

To edit PDF metadata, upload the file and fill in any of four fields: title, author, subject and keywords, each up to 255 characters. Fields you leave blank keep their current value. You can also tick one box to clear all of the PDF's metadata instead. The edited PDF downloads as a new file; the page content is not changed, only the document properties that readers show.

How to change PDF properties

Choose a PDF up to 25 MiB and type values for the fields you want to change. Submit the form and download the file, named after the original with -edited added. Open it in your PDF viewer's document properties dialog to confirm the new title and author. Metadata is also what browser tabs and search results often show for a PDF.

What blank fields do

A blank field is not erased, it is left alone. To change only the author, fill in the author and leave the rest empty. This also means you cannot blank one field while keeping the others. If you want to wipe a single value, use the clear option and then enter the values you still want in a second pass.

Clearing metadata

Tick the clear option to remove the document information fields, such as title, author, creator and producer. When it is ticked, the text fields are ignored. This is helpful before sharing a file you do not want to carry an author name or software tag. It handles the standard document info, so check the result in a properties viewer if privacy matters.

Metadata is not content

These fields do not appear on the pages, so changing them will not hide text, comments or images inside the file. For visible changes use Watermark PDF or Crop PDF. If you need the text itself, PDF to Text extracts it. Encrypted PDFs are rejected, so remove the password with the PDF Password tool first.

Frequently asked questions

How do I change the author of a PDF?

Upload the file, type the new name in the Author field and leave the other fields blank. Submit and download the edited PDF. The author property is updated and the other properties stay as they were.

How do I remove metadata from a PDF?

Tick the option to clear all metadata and submit. The tool removes the document information fields, so author, title and similar properties are blanked. Check the result in your viewer's properties dialog.

Which metadata fields can I edit?

Four fields: title, author, subject and keywords, each up to 255 characters. Other properties like creator, producer and dates are not editable here, though the clear option removes document information entirely.

Does editing metadata change the PDF's pages?

No. Only the document properties change. Text, images and layout on the pages are untouched, apart from the file being re-saved with cleaned-up internal objects. Your original upload stays as it was.

Why does my PDF still show the old title in a browser tab?

Some viewers cache titles or use the file name instead, and a few read a separate XMP record that this tool does not edit. Reopen the new file in another viewer to check the stored title.
