Change the background of a photo

Swap in a new background color or image instantly.

To change background of photo files, upload your image, pick a solid colour or upload a replacement background image, and download the result as a PNG. The tool first cuts out the subject automatically, then places it on the new background. You can also blur the replacement image from 1 to 50. The cutout works best on a clear, centred subject and is less reliable on cluttered or low-contrast photos.

How to change a photo background

Upload the photo, then choose either a background colour (white by default) or a second image to use instead. If you upload a background image, you can set a blur level to make it look out of focus behind the subject. Submit the form and download background-changed.png. The tool outputs a flat image, not a transparent one.

Colour or image background

A solid colour suits ID-style photos, product shots and profile pictures. A background image is resized and centre-cropped to fill the same dimensions as your photo, so parts of it may be trimmed. When both are provided, the background image is used and the colour is ignored. Blur only applies to a background image, not to a solid colour.

Limits of the automatic cutout

The subject is found with OpenCV's GrabCut, a colour-based method, not an AI model. It assumes the subject sits inside a box 4 percent in from the edges. Hair, fur, glass, a subject near the border or a background in similar colours can leave halos or missing pieces. The edge softness is fixed, and you cannot paint corrections, so use a plain original where you can.

If you need a transparent cutout to use elsewhere, use the Background Remover, which offers an edge softness setting. Afterwards you can crop with Crop Image, resize with the Image Resizer, or shrink the PNG with the Image Compressor.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a photo behind my subject instead of a colour?

Yes. Upload a second image in the background field and it replaces the colour. It is fitted to your photo's size and cropped to fill. You can also blur it with a value from 1 to 50.

What format is the result?

The result is a PNG named background-changed.png. It is a flat image with the new background baked in, not a transparent file. If you need transparency, use the Background Remover instead.

Why does my subject look cut out badly?

The tool separates subject and background by colour. It struggles when they share colours, when the subject touches the frame edge or when hair is fine and wispy. A plainer original or a tighter crop usually improves it.

Does the blur apply to the whole photo?

No. The blur is applied only to the replacement background image you upload, before the subject is placed on top. It does nothing when you use a solid colour, and the subject itself stays sharp.

What is the maximum file size?

The photo and the optional background image can each be up to 20 MiB, in JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP format. Large images take longer to process, so resize them first if needed.
