Remove the background from an image
Automatically remove the background from any photo.
To remove background from image files, upload a JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP up to 20 MiB, set the edge softness and download a transparent PNG. The tool guesses the subject with a classic computer-vision method, not an AI model, so it works well on a clear, roughly centred subject against a contrasting background and struggles with busy scenes, hair or similar colours. Check the result before you rely on it.
How to remove a background
Choose an image, adjust edge softness from 1 to 25 (the default is 5) and submit the form. You download a PNG named background-removed.png, with the background made transparent. Open it on a dark and a light backdrop to spot leftover fringes. The original file is not changed, so you can run it again with a different softness.
How the cutout is decided
The tool uses OpenCV's GrabCut. It assumes the subject sits inside a box that starts 4 percent in from every edge, treats everything outside the box as background, then separates foreground from background by colour inside it. Nothing is uploaded to an external AI service. The trade-off is that it cannot recognise what a person or product is, only how its colours differ from the rest.
What works and what does not
Good inputs are a product on a plain wall, a portrait with a simple backdrop, or a logo on a flat colour. Expect rough results when the subject touches the image edge, when the background shares its colours, or when fine detail such as hair, fur or glass is involved. Parts of the subject can be cut away or bits of background kept. There are no brush tools for fixing the mask, so crop the photo tighter first or retake it against a plainer background.
Edge softness and next steps
Higher softness blurs the edge of the cutout so it blends into a new backdrop, while a low value keeps a harder edge that can look jagged. To put the subject on a colour or photo, use the Background Changer. To make the transparent PNG smaller, run it through the Image Compressor.
Frequently asked questions
Does the background remover use AI?
No. It uses OpenCV's GrabCut algorithm, which separates subject and background by colour without a trained model. That keeps it simple, but it is less accurate than AI cutout tools on complex scenes, so check every result.
What file do I get after removing the background?
You get a PNG named background-removed.png with a transparent background. PNG is used because JPG cannot store transparency. Open it in an editor or on a web page to place the subject on any backdrop.
Why are the edges rough or parts of my subject missing?
GrabCut works from colour differences, so a subject that shares colours with its background, touches the image edge or has fine detail like hair can be cut badly. Try a higher edge softness, a plainer background or a tighter crop.
What is the maximum image size?
Each upload can be up to 20 MiB in JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP format. One image is processed at a time. Shrink a very large photo with the Image Resizer first if processing is slow.
Can I remove a background and add a new one?
Not in this tool, which only makes the background transparent. The Background Changer does both steps: it cuts out the subject and places it on a solid colour or an image you upload.
