Resize an image by pixels or percentage

Resize photos to any dimension or aspect ratio.

To resize image files, upload one, then enter a width, a height or a percentage and download the result. If you give only a width or only a height, the other side is calculated so the proportions stay the same. A percentage from 1 to 500 scales both sides together. The file keeps its original format, and the pixel size is added to the file name so you can tell versions apart.

How to resize an image

Choose a JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP up to 20 MiB. Fill in a width, a height or the percentage field, then submit. At least one of the three is required. The result is named like photo-800x600.jpg, using the final dimensions. The original is not modified.

Keeping or changing the proportions

Enter just one of width or height and the other follows automatically, so nothing is squashed. Enter both and the image is stretched to exactly that size, with no aspect-ratio lock and no cropping, so a mismatched pair will distort it. When you need a specific shape without distortion, resize first and then trim with Crop Image.

Size limits and quality

Width and height can each be from 1 to 6000 pixels. Percentage can be from 1 to 500, so you can enlarge as well as shrink, though enlarging adds no real detail and can look soft. Resampling uses the Lanczos method, which suits downsizing photos. For large enlargements, expect softness: no resizer can add detail that the photo never had.

Resize versus compress

Resizing changes pixel dimensions, which usually shrinks the file as a side effect. Compressing changes how the pixels are stored. For web and email, do both: resize to the size you need, then run the result through the Image Compressor. The output format is unchanged; to switch format use the Image Converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize an image without stretching it?

Enter only a width or only a height. The other dimension is calculated from the original proportions, so the picture is not distorted. If you enter both values, the image is forced to that exact size and can look stretched.

Can I resize an image by percentage?

Yes. Enter a percentage from 1 to 500 and both sides are scaled by that amount, for example 50 for half the width and height. When a percentage is given, any width and height fields are ignored.

What is the maximum size I can resize to?

Width and height can each be set up to 6000 pixels, and the upload can be up to 20 MiB. Percentages up to 500 are accepted, so very large originals enlarged by a high percentage may be rejected or slow.

Will resizing change the file format?

No. The output uses the same format as the file you upload, so a JPG stays a JPG and a PNG stays a PNG. Use the Image Converter if you also want a different format.

Does making an image bigger improve its quality?

No. Enlarging only interpolates existing pixels, so the picture gets larger but not sharper. Keep the original where you can, and enlarge by small steps only. Very large enlargements will always look soft, whichever tool you use.
