Compress an image to a smaller file size

Reduce image file size with minimal quality loss.

To compress image files, upload a JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP up to 20 MiB, choose a quality from 10 to 95 and download the smaller file. Quality affects JPG and WEBP, which are lossy, so lower values give smaller files with visible softening. PNG is recompressed without losing pixels, so it shrinks less. You can also cap the longest side to a set number of pixels, which often saves the most.

How to compress an image

Choose an image, move the quality slider (it starts at 75) and, if you like, enter a maximum dimension between 100 and 6000 pixels. Submit and download the file, which is named after the original with -compressed added. The result page compares sizes, so you can see what you saved and re-run with another setting if needed.

What each format does

JPG and WEBP are re-saved at your chosen quality, and JPG is also optimised. PNG ignores the quality slider: it is saved losslessly at maximum compression, so photos saved as PNG often barely shrink. GIF and BMP are saved again in the same format without a quality control, so they may not change much. The output keeps the original format; it does not convert.

Dimension limit versus quality

Pixel count drives file size as much as quality does. If a phone photo is 4000 pixels wide and will only appear 1200 pixels wide on a page, setting a maximum dimension of 1200 cuts size far more than lowering quality, with less visible damage. The image is only shrunk when its longest side exceeds your value, never enlarged, and the aspect ratio is kept.

Checking the result

Savings are not guaranteed. An image that is already well compressed can come out the same size or slightly larger. Open the output at full size and look at faces, text and gradients before you replace the original. To change format instead of compressing, use the Image Converter; to set exact dimensions, use the Image Resizer.

Frequently asked questions

What quality setting should I use to compress an image?

A value around 70 to 80 is a sensible start for photos and is close to the default of 75. Go lower for smaller files if you can accept softer detail. Compare the output with the original before using it.

Does compressing an image reduce its quality?

For JPG and WEBP, yes: lower quality values discard detail to save space. PNG is recompressed without losing pixels. If you also set a maximum dimension, the image is downscaled, which reduces detail further.

Why did my PNG barely get smaller?

The quality slider does not apply to PNG, which is lossless. The tool only re-saves it with maximum compression, so gains are small. To shrink a PNG much more, set a maximum dimension or convert a photo to JPG or WEBP.

Can I compress an image to an exact size like 100 KB?

No. There is no target-size setting. You choose a quality and an optional maximum dimension, then check the resulting size. If it is still too big, lower the quality or the dimension and run it again.

What is the maximum file size I can upload?

Each image can be up to 20 MiB, in JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP format, and the tool handles one image at a time. The output keeps the same format as the file you upload.
