Extract audio from video as MP3, WAV and more

Pull the audio track out of a video as an MP3.

To extract audio from video, upload the file, choose MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG or AAC and download the sound track on its own. The picture is dropped and only the audio is written, so the result is much smaller than the video. The video must contain an audio stream, and each upload can be up to 200 MiB. Processing runs through a queue, and you collect the file from a status page.

How to extract audio

Choose a video, pick an output format under Convert to and submit. When the status page shows your file is ready, download it. The name is your video's name with -audio added. The original video is not changed, so you can extract again in another format.

Choosing an audio format

MP3 is the safe choice for sharing and works everywhere. AAC suits phones and Apple devices. OGG is an open format with good quality at small sizes. WAV and FLAC are for editing and archiving: WAV is uncompressed and large, while FLAC is compressed with no loss from the decoded audio. Lossy formats cannot restore detail the video's audio lost.

What to expect from the result

The tool decodes the video's sound and encodes it again in the format you chose, with fixed settings. MP3 uses a variable-quality setting, AAC is written at 192 kbps and OGG uses Vorbis. There is no bitrate menu here. If you need a different bitrate, convert the extracted file afterwards with the Audio Converter.

Common problems

A video with no audio track, such as a screen recording made without sound, cannot produce an audio file and will fail. Check that the file plays with sound first. Only files ending in .mp4, .mov, .avi, .webm or .mkv are accepted. To do the opposite and remove the sound, use Mute Video.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extract MP3 audio from a video?

Upload the video, choose MP3 under Convert to and submit. The tool removes the picture and encodes the sound as MP3. Download it from the status page when processing finishes.

Which audio formats can I get?

MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG and AAC. Choose MP3 for general use, WAV or FLAC when you plan to edit the audio, and AAC for phones. The same video can be extracted again in another format.

Why did extraction fail?

The most likely reason is that the video has no audio track. Other reasons are an unsupported extension or a file over 200 MiB. Confirm the video plays with sound and uses MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV.

Will I get better quality with WAV?

WAV holds the decoded audio without further compression, so it adds no new loss. It cannot restore quality that the video's compressed audio already lost, and the file is much larger than an MP3.

Is there a length limit for extracting audio?

The tool does not check the video length. The limits that apply are the 200 MiB file size cap and the processing time limit, after which a long job is cancelled. Trim very long videos first.
