Compress video to a smaller MP4

Shrink large videos without losing quality.

To compress video, upload a file, choose light, standard or aggressive compression and download a smaller MP4. The tool re-encodes the video with H.264 at a higher compression setting and keeps the original width and height, so only the bitrate drops. After processing it shows the original and new file sizes. How much you save depends on the footage and on how the source was encoded. Videos can be up to 200 MiB and 5 minutes.

How to compress a video

Choose a video, pick a compression level and submit. The job joins a queue, and the status page refreshes until your file is ready. Compare the new size with the original, then watch the result before you delete anything. The download is always an MP4 with AAC audio at 128 kbps, whatever format you uploaded.

Light, standard or aggressive

The three levels use increasing compression: light is the best quality and the smallest saving, standard is a balance, and aggressive gives the smallest file with visible softness and blocky areas in fast motion. Start with standard. If the file is still too big, try aggressive on the original upload rather than recompressing the output.

What this tool does not do

There is no target-size setting, so you cannot ask for exactly 10 MB, and the resolution is not changed. A file that is already heavily compressed may shrink very little and can even grow. If you need a lower resolution too, use the Resize Video tool, which sets an exact width or height.

Limits and ways to get under an upload cap

Uploads must be MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV, up to 200 MiB, and no longer than 5 minutes. For email or chat limits, compress first, then trim the parts you do not need with Trim Video. Keep the original file in case the compressed copy loses detail you need.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my video get?

It varies with the footage and how it was encoded. Aggressive saves the most, light the least. Already-compressed phone or screen recordings may shrink only a little. The tool shows the original and new sizes so you can check.

Does compressing a video reduce its resolution?

No. Width and height stay the same. Quality drops through a higher compression setting on the video stream instead. If you also want fewer pixels, run the result through the Resize Video tool.

Can I compress a video to a specific size, like 25 MB?

No. You choose light, standard or aggressive and see the outcome. If the file is still over your limit, compress the original again with a stronger level, or trim it to a shorter length first.

What format is the compressed video?

Always MP4, with H.264 video and AAC audio at 128 kbps, even if you upload MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV. The file name gets a -compressed suffix so you can tell it apart from the original.

Is there a limit on video length?

Yes. Videos over 5 minutes are rejected, and each upload must be under 200 MiB. Split longer footage with the Trim Video tool, compress each part, and join them again with Merge Videos if you need one file.
