Mute video and remove its audio track
Strip the audio track out of a video entirely.
To mute video files, upload one and download a copy with the audio track removed. The tool copies the picture stream as it is and drops the sound, so the video is not re-encoded and quality does not change. The result is an MP4 with your file name plus -muted. There are no options to set: no volume slider, only complete removal of the audio. Each upload can be up to 200 MiB.
How to remove audio from a video
Choose a video file and submit the form. There is nothing else to configure. After a short wait on the status page, download the muted MP4. Play it before you share it to confirm that it is silent, and keep the original in case you need the sound later.
Why it does not change the picture
Muting copies the existing video data into a new MP4 file and leaves the audio out, so there is no second round of compression. That makes it fast and keeps the picture identical to your source. The same shortcut means the video codec must be one an MP4 container can hold, and an unusual codec may cause a failure.
When to use something else
If you want to keep the sound but save it as a separate file, use Extract Audio from Video. If you want the video smaller, use the Video Compressor. If you need a different container, the Video Converter re-encodes the file, which mute does not. The tool removes all audio and cannot lower the volume or replace it.
Limits
Uploads must end in .mp4, .mov, .avi, .webm or .mkv and be under 200 MiB. Unlike most other video tools here, mute does not check the video length. Processing still runs through the queue and stops if it takes too long. Because the output is always MP4, an AVI or MKV source changes container.
Frequently asked questions
Does muting a video reduce its quality?
No. The picture is copied into the new file without re-encoding, so it looks the same as the original. Only the audio track is removed, and the file usually gets a little smaller.
Can I just lower the volume instead?
Not with this tool. It removes the audio completely and has no volume setting. If you need the sound as a separate file, extract it with Extract Audio from Video before you mute.
What format is the muted video?
An MP4 named after your file with -muted added. If you upload MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV, the picture is placed in an MP4 container. If a codec cannot go in MP4, the job may fail, and the Video Converter is the alternative.
Is there a maximum file size?
Yes, 200 MiB per video. The file must have an MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV extension. Compress a larger video first with the Video Compressor, then mute the smaller copy.
Can I replace the audio with music?
No. This tool only removes sound; it cannot add a new track. Mute the clip here, then use a separate editor to lay new audio over the silent video file.
