Convert video to GIF with start time and frame rate

Turn short video clips into shareable GIFs.

To convert video to GIF, upload a clip, set where it starts, choose a frame rate from 1 to 30 and a width from 100 to 1280 pixels, then download the GIF. The tool takes at most 15 seconds of the video, beginning at your start time. The GIF has no sound, and it is built with a custom colour palette to keep colours closer to the video. Longer or sharper settings produce much bigger files.

How to make a GIF from a video

Choose a video up to 200 MiB. Leave the start time at 0 to begin at the first frame, or enter seconds to start later. Set frames per second (default 10) and max width (default 480), submit, and wait on the status page. The result is a looping GIF named after your video.

The 15-second limit

When your video is longer than 15 seconds, only 15 seconds are used, starting at the start time you gave. Shorter videos are converted whole. If you need a different section, change the start time and run it again. For frame-accurate cutting before you convert, use Trim Video first.

Frame rate and width: size trade-offs

GIF files grow quickly. Ten frames per second at 480 px wide is a sensible start for reactions and demos. Raise the frame rate for smoother motion, or lower it to 5-8 to shrink the file. The width is applied to every clip, so a video narrower than your setting is enlarged. Pick a width that is not larger than the source.

What a GIF cannot do

GIFs are limited to 256 colours per image and carry no audio. Gradients and skin tones can show banding even with the palette step. If you need sound or long playback, keep a video format and use the Video Compressor instead. To pull the sound out separately, use Extract Audio from Video.

Frequently asked questions

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 15 seconds. If your video is longer, the tool uses 15 seconds starting from the start time you enter. Shorter videos are converted in full. For a different part of the video, change the start time.

What frame rate and size should I use?

Ten frames per second and 480 pixels wide are the defaults and work for most clips. The tool accepts 1 to 30 frames per second and widths from 100 to 1280 pixels. Lower values give smaller files.

Does the GIF include sound?

No. GIF is a silent format, so the audio is dropped. If you need the sound as well, extract it separately with Extract Audio from Video, or keep the clip as a video with Trim Video.

Why is my GIF file so large?

GIF stores each frame as an image, so more frames, a wider picture and more movement all add size. Lower the frame rate, reduce the max width, or shorten the section with the start time and try again.

Which videos can I turn into a GIF?

Upload MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV files up to 200 MiB. Processing runs through a queue, and you download the GIF from the status page once it is done. Very large inputs can take several minutes.
