Trim video to a start time and duration

Cut a video down to a specific start time and duration.

To trim video, upload a file, enter the start time in seconds and how many seconds you want to keep, then download the cut as an MP4. You set a start and a duration, not an end time, so a clip from 12 s to 20 s is start 12 and duration 8. The section is re-encoded rather than copied, which keeps cuts accurate at the cost of some processing time. Videos can be up to 200 MiB and 5 minutes.

How to trim a video

Choose a video file. Enter Start time in seconds, where 0 is the beginning, then Duration in seconds, which must be at least 0.1. Decimals such as 2.5 are accepted. Submit the form, wait for the queue to finish and download the trimmed MP4. The file name ends in -trimmed.

Working out start and duration

Because the tool asks for a duration, subtract the start from the end point. To keep from 1:05 to 1:30, convert 1:05 to 65 seconds, then use a duration of 25. If the duration runs past the end of the video, the output simply stops where the video ends.

Quality and format

Trimming re-encodes the clip with H.264 video and AAC audio, whatever the input format was, and the output is always an MP4. Re-encoding makes the cut land on the time you asked for, but it is not a lossless cut. For a lossless copy you would need a desktop editor that supports stream copy.

Limits and related tools

Accepted uploads are MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM and MKV, up to 200 MiB, and no longer than 5 minutes. To join pieces back together, use Merge Videos. To turn the trimmed section into an animation, use Video to GIF, and to speed it up or slow it down, use the Video Speed Changer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cut a video to a certain length?

Enter the start time in seconds and the duration you want to keep. For the first 30 seconds, use start 0 and duration 30. The tool returns that section as an MP4 you can download.

Can I set an end time instead of a duration?

No, the form takes a duration. Subtract your start time from your end time to get it. For a cut from 40 s to 55 s, enter start 40 and duration 15.

Is trimming lossless?

No. The clip is re-encoded with H.264 and AAC, so there can be a small quality change. In return, the cut lands at the time you entered instead of the nearest keyframe.

Can I trim a video longer than 5 minutes?

No. Videos over 5 minutes are rejected, and uploads must be under 200 MiB. If your footage is longer, you need to cut it elsewhere first, or use a smaller or compressed copy within the limit.

What format is the trimmed video?

Always MP4, even if you upload MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV. It uses H.264 video and AAC audio, which plays on most devices. Use the Video Converter if you need a different format afterwards.
