Video converter for MP4, MOV, AVI and WEBM

Convert video between MP4, MOV, AVI and more.

Use this video converter to turn an MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV file into MP4, MOV, AVI or WEBM. Upload one video up to 200 MiB and 5 minutes long, pick the output format and, if you want, a height of 480p, 720p or 1080p. The video is re-encoded rather than copied, so conversion takes a while. Large files wait in a queue, and you download the result from a status page that refreshes on its own.

How to convert a video

Choose a video file, select MP4, MOV, AVI or WEBM under Convert to, and leave the resolution on Keep original resolution unless you want a different height. Submit the form. Your file is queued, the status page refreshes until it is ready, and then you can download the converted file. The output keeps your original file name with the new extension.

What happens to the video and audio

Every conversion re-encodes the streams. MP4 and MOV use H.264 video with AAC audio, WEBM uses VP9 video with Opus audio, and AVI uses MPEG-4 video with MP3 audio. Re-encoding means a small quality change is normal, even at the same resolution. Pick MP4 if you are unsure: it plays on phones, browsers and most editors.

Changing the resolution

The resolution menu sets the output height to 480, 720 or 1080 pixels and works out the width to keep the shape of the picture. It does not check whether the source is smaller, so choosing 1080p for a 480p clip enlarges it without adding detail. Leave the menu on original when you only need a different container.

Limits to know about

Files must have the extension .mp4, .mov, .avi, .webm or .mkv and be under 200 MiB. Videos longer than 5 minutes are rejected, and a single conversion that runs too long is cancelled. For a smaller file rather than a new format, use the Video Compressor. To keep only the sound, use Extract Audio from Video.

Frequently asked questions

Which video formats can I convert to?

You can convert to MP4, MOV, AVI or WEBM. Uploads can be MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV files. There is no MKV output option, so convert an MKV to MP4 if you need it to play more widely.

How do I convert a video to MP4?

Upload your file, choose MP4 in the Convert to menu and submit. The tool re-encodes it with H.264 video and AAC audio, which most phones, browsers and editors play. Download the file when the status page says it is ready.

Is there a video length or size limit?

Yes. Each upload can be up to 200 MiB, and videos longer than 5 minutes are not accepted. For longer footage, cut it into parts with the Trim Video tool first, then convert each part.

Will converting reduce video quality?

Slightly, in most cases. The converter re-encodes the video instead of copying it, so some detail can change even at the original resolution. Choosing a lower height such as 480p reduces quality further, though it also shrinks the file.

Can I change the resolution while converting?

Yes. Choose 480p, 720p or 1080p, or keep the original. The width is set automatically to match. Picking a height larger than the source stretches the picture, so it will look softer rather than sharper.
