Generate a favicon.ico from an image

Generate a multi-size .ico favicon from one image.

This favicon generator turns a JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP into a favicon.ico. Upload your logo or icon, tick the sizes you want from 16x16 to 256x256 and download favicon.ico. All selected sizes are packed into one ICO file, so browsers and operating systems can pick the right one. Start from a square image with a simple shape, since a favicon is shown at very small sizes.

How to create a favicon

Upload an image up to 20 MiB, choose the sizes to include and submit the form. The available sizes are 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels, and all are selected by default. You download one file named favicon.ico containing every size you ticked.

Which sizes to include

Browser tabs use 16x16 and 32x32. Windows shortcuts and some bookmark bars use 48x48 and larger sizes. Keeping all six is safe and the file stays small. If you leave every box unticked, the tool falls back to including all six sizes. PNG transparency is kept inside the ICO.

Prepare the source image

Use a square image, ideally at least 256 by 256 pixels, with a bold simple mark and no fine text. Fine detail disappears at 16 pixels. A non-square image may be distorted, so crop it to a square first. Make a transparent PNG if you want the icon to sit cleanly on dark and light browser themes.

Using the favicon on your site

Upload favicon.ico to the root of your site and add a link tag in the head, such as a rel=icon line pointing to /favicon.ico. This tool produces ICO only, not Apple touch icons or a web manifest. To prepare the source first, use the Image Resizer, or the Image Converter to switch an SVG-exported PNG.

Frequently asked questions

What image should I use to make a favicon?

Use a square logo or icon, ideally 256 by 256 pixels or larger, with a simple shape and strong contrast. Detailed images and small text become unreadable when shown at 16 pixels in a browser tab.

What sizes does the favicon contain?

You can include 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel squares. All are selected by default and are bundled into one favicon.ico file, so each browser or system can choose the size it needs.

Does it create PNG or Apple touch icons?

No. The output is a single favicon.ico file. If you need a PNG at one size, use the Image Resizer, and for an SVG source, the SVG Converter can render it to PNG at a width you choose.

Will transparency be kept in the favicon?

Yes. The image is converted to RGBA before the ICO is written, so transparent areas of a PNG remain transparent in the icon. JPG files have no transparency, so they get a solid background.

Where do I put favicon.ico on my website?

Place favicon.ico in the root folder of your site and reference it in the page head with a rel=icon link to /favicon.ico. Browsers also request that path by default, so it often works even without the tag.
