Add a border to an image

Add a solid color border or frame around an image.

To add border to image files, upload one, set the border width from 1 to 200 pixels, pick a colour and download the framed copy. You can also set a corner radius from 1 to 500 pixels to round the picture's corners. The border is added outside the picture, so the image gets larger by twice the border width in each direction and nothing is covered. The output is saved as a PNG.

How to add a border

Choose an image, set the width in pixels (the default is 20) and choose the colour with the picker (black by default). Leave rounded corners empty for square corners. Submit and download a file named after the original with -bordered added. The original is not modified.

How the size changes

The frame is added around the outside. A 20 px border on an 800 by 600 image gives an 840 by 640 image. Your picture is not scaled or cropped. If you need exact final dimensions, add the border first and then use the Image Resizer, or resize first and allow for the border.

Rounded corners

A radius value rounds the corners of the picture itself, and the outer corners stay square. The area cut away from the corners becomes transparent, while the border is filled with your chosen colour. When rounded corners are used the output is a PNG with transparency. A radius larger than half the shorter side turns the picture into a pill or circle shape.

Output format and uses

The result is a PNG, even from a JPG upload, so the file may be bigger than the source. Compress it with the Image Compressor if you need to share it. A thin white border suits photo prints, a thick black one gives a framed look, and a colour that matches your site works for thumbnails. To mark the picture as yours, add a mark with Watermark Image.

Frequently asked questions

How wide can the border be?

From 1 to 200 pixels. The default is 20. The border is added around the outside of the picture, so the final image is larger by twice the border width in both width and height.

Can I choose any border colour?

Yes. Use the colour picker to choose any colour, or enter a hex code such as #22d3aa if your browser shows a text field. The default is black (#000000), and the same colour is applied on all four sides.

Can I round the corners of an image?

Yes. Enter a corner radius from 1 to 500 pixels. The picture's corners are rounded and the cut-away areas become transparent, with the coloured border around it. The result is saved as a PNG.

Does adding a border crop my picture?

No. The border is added around the image, so the original content stays whole and the file gets bigger. If you need the same final size as before, shrink the result with the Image Resizer.

Why is my output a PNG instead of a JPG?

The tool saves bordered images as PNG, which can make the file larger than a JPG. Use the Image Converter to switch back to JPG or the Image Compressor to reduce the size.
