Create a QR code from a link or text

Turn any text or URL into a scannable QR code.

This QR code generator turns a URL or any text (up to 1,000 characters) into a PNG. Paste it in, pick the colors and an error correction level and download it. The code is static: the data is stored inside the image itself, so it never expires, has no scan counter and does not depend on this site staying online. Keep strong contrast between the two colors so phones can read it.

How to make a QR code

Enter the text or link, choose a foreground color (black by default) and a background color (white by default), then select an error correction level. Submit and download qr-code.png. The image uses 10 pixel modules with a 2 module quiet border, and its size grows with the amount of data.

Error correction levels explained

Low recovers about 7 percent of damage, Medium (the default) about 15, Quartile about 25 and High about 30. Higher levels let a code survive scratches, folds or a logo placed over it, but they add modules and make the code denser. Choose Low for short links shown on a screen and High for print.

Choosing colors that scan

Scanners need a dark code on a light background with high contrast. Dark blue on white works well. Light foreground on a dark background, or two similar colors, often fails on older phones. Always test a printed or on-screen code with a phone before you publish it. A shorter link gives a simpler code that is easier to scan at small sizes.

Static codes and what they do not do

Because the data is embedded, you cannot change a code later or track how often it is scanned. If the destination changes, you need a new code. Wi-Fi details can be encoded using the standard WIFI text format, but the tool offers no form fields for it. To check a code you received, use the QR Code Reader.

Frequently asked questions

Is the QR code free and does it expire?

The code is a static image with your data embedded, so it does not expire and does not rely on this site afterwards. Nothing is tracked, which also means you cannot see scan counts or edit the destination later.

What error correction level should I choose?

Medium is a good default. Choose Low for short links on a screen where a smaller code helps, and High if the code will be printed, may get scratched or will have a logo on top.

How much text can a QR code hold?

This generator accepts up to 1,000 characters. More text produces a denser code that is harder to scan, so use a short URL where possible. Test the result with a phone before printing it.

What format and size is the QR code image?

You get a PNG file. Each module is 10 pixels with a small quiet border, so the picture size depends on how much data you encode. It is a raster image, not an SVG.

Why won't my colored QR code scan?

The most common cause is low contrast. Use a dark foreground on a light background. Inverted codes and similar colors fail on many scanners. Raise the error correction level and test with several phones.
