Resize video to a new width or height

Change a video's resolution to any width and height.

To resize video, upload a file and enter a width, a height or both, anywhere from 2 to 3840 pixels, then download the result as an MP4. Enter only one value and the other is worked out to keep the picture in proportion. Enter both and the video is forced to exactly that size, which can stretch it. Odd numbers are rounded up to the next even number. Videos can be up to 200 MiB and 5 minutes.

How to resize a video

Choose a video, then fill in Width, Height or both. At least one is required. Submit the form, wait for the queue and download the MP4. The file name includes the size you asked for, such as -720h or -640x360, so several versions are easy to tell apart.

One dimension or two

Use one dimension to keep the proportions. A width of 1280 on a 16:9 video gives 1280 by 720. Use both only when you need an exact frame, for example 1080 by 1080. The tool does not crop or add black bars, so a mismatched shape is squashed or stretched to fit.

Even numbers and upscaling

H.264 video needs even dimensions, so a value like 641 is raised to 642. The tool does not stop you from entering a size larger than the source. That enlarges the picture without adding detail, and the file grows. To shrink file size instead, the Video Compressor changes the compression level without changing the dimensions.

Quality, format and limits

The video is re-encoded as H.264 with AAC audio into an MP4, whatever the input format. Uploads must be MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM or MKV, no longer than 5 minutes. For simple presets of 480p, 720p or 1080p together with a format change, the Video Converter is quicker to use.

Frequently asked questions

How do I resize a video and keep the aspect ratio?

Enter only a width or only a height and leave the other field empty. The missing dimension is calculated to keep the proportions. For example, a width of 1280 on a 16:9 clip produces 1280 by 720.

What happens if I enter both width and height?

The video is scaled to exactly that size, without cropping or bars. If the new shape differs from the original, the picture is stretched or squashed. Use a single value if you want to avoid distortion.

What is the largest size I can set?

Both width and height accept values from 2 to 3840 pixels. Setting a size above the original enlarges the video but does not add detail, and the file becomes larger.

Why was my size changed by one pixel?

H.264 video needs even dimensions, so an odd width or height is rounded up to the next even number. A request for 801 pixels gives 802. When you leave one field empty, its value is also chosen to be even.

What format does the resized video use?

An MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio, regardless of the input format. Videos over 5 minutes or 200 MiB are not accepted. Use the Trim Video tool first if your footage is too long.
