Rotate or flip an image
Rotate an image and flip it horizontally or vertically.
To rotate image files, upload one, choose 90, 180 or 270 degrees clockwise, and optionally tick flip horizontally or flip vertically. Then download the result. Only these three quarter-turn angles are available, so you cannot straighten a photo by a few degrees. Rotation and flips can be combined in a single step, and the original file is left unchanged. The output is a PNG named after your file with -rotated added.
How to rotate or flip a picture
Choose an image, pick the clockwise angle from the list (0, 90, 180 or 270) and tick any flip options. Submit and download. A 90 or 270 degree turn swaps the width and height, and the canvas is enlarged so nothing is cut off. For a counter-clockwise turn of 90 degrees, choose 270.
Rotate versus flip
Rotating turns the picture around its centre. Flipping horizontally mirrors it left to right, as in a mirror, which is useful for selfies or text that appears reversed. Flipping vertically mirrors it top to bottom. If you tick both flips together, the result looks the same as a 180 degree rotation.
What the output looks like
The result is saved as a PNG, even from a JPG upload, so no extra JPG compression is added but the file may be larger. Use the Image Compressor or Image Converter if you need a smaller JPG afterwards. There is no arbitrary-angle rotation, such as 15 degrees, and no automatic straightening.
Sideways photos and related tools
A photo that looks sideways usually needs a 90 or 270 degree turn. Because the output carries no EXIF data, the new orientation is what you see everywhere. After rotating you can trim the edges with Crop Image, resize with the Image Resizer, or remove location data with the Strip Image Metadata tool.
Frequently asked questions
How do I rotate an image 90 degrees?
Upload the image, select 90 in the clockwise angle list and submit. The picture turns a quarter-turn to the right. For a quarter-turn to the left, choose 270, which is the same as 90 degrees counter-clockwise.
Can I rotate an image by any angle?
No. The angle list has 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees only. There is no free rotation or straightening for small tilts. For those, use an editor with a free-angle rotate and crop tool.
How do I mirror an image?
Tick Flip horizontally to mirror it left to right, or Flip vertically to mirror it top to bottom. You can combine a flip with a rotation in one run. The original file is not changed.
Why did my JPG come back as a PNG?
The tool saves the transformed image as a PNG. PNG is lossless, so the pixels are not recompressed, but the file can be larger than your JPG. Convert it back with the Image Converter if needed.
Is there a size limit?
Each image can be up to 20 MiB in JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF or BMP format, and one image is handled per run. Animated GIFs come back as a single still frame.
