Remove EXIF metadata from an image
Remove EXIF and other hidden metadata from a photo.
To remove EXIF data from image files, upload one and download a clean copy. The tool rebuilds the picture from its pixels alone, so embedded metadata such as camera details, date and GPS location is not carried over. The file keeps its original format, and the name gets -no-metadata added. It accepts JPG, PNG, WEBP, GIF and BMP files up to 20 MiB and handles one image at a time.
How to strip metadata from a photo
Choose an image and submit the form. There are no settings. You get a copy that is named after the original with -no-metadata added, in the same format as the upload. Keep the original if you still need its details, because the clean copy cannot restore them.
What gets removed
The new image is created from a blank canvas and filled with the pixel data, then saved without copying the old file's EXIF block or other embedded info. That covers fields such as camera model, capture time and GPS coordinates when present. It is a pixel-only rebuild, so any embedded colour profile is dropped too, and colours can look slightly different in some viewers.
What it cannot remove
The tool works on embedded file data, so it cannot remove what is visible in the picture itself, such as a street sign or a face.
Quality, orientation and related tools
For JPG the pixels are re-encoded when the clean copy is saved, with Pillow's default quality, so the file may change size slightly and can lose a little detail. If a phone photo relied on an EXIF orientation tag to display upright, it may appear sideways afterwards; fix it with Rotate / Flip Image.
Frequently asked questions
Does this remove GPS location from a photo?
Yes, when the location is stored as EXIF or other embedded metadata. The tool rebuilds the picture from pixels only, so that data is not copied. Open the downloaded copy's file properties on your computer to confirm before you share it.
Will stripping metadata reduce image quality?
The pixels are kept, but a JPG is saved again when the clean copy is written, so a small amount of compression loss and a slightly different file size are possible. PNG is lossless. Keep your original file.
Why does my photo look rotated after removing metadata?
Some cameras store orientation as an EXIF tag instead of turning the pixels. The tool removes that tag, so the picture can show sideways. Correct it with the Rotate / Flip Image tool, choosing 90, 180 or 270 degrees.
Which image formats are supported?
JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, GIF and BMP files up to 20 MiB are accepted, and the clean copy keeps the same format. HEIC files are not supported here, so convert them first with the HEIC Converter.
Can I check that the metadata is really gone?
Open the original and the cleaned copy in your computer's file properties or photo app and compare the details. The cleaned copy should show no camera model, date taken or location.
