Change video speed from 0.25x to 4x

Speed up or slow down a video (and its audio).

Use this video speed changer to make a clip faster or slower. Enter a speed multiplier from 0.25 to 4, where 2 plays twice as fast and 0.5 plays at half speed, and download an MP4. The audio is sped up or slowed down along with the picture, and its pitch is kept as close to normal as the process allows. Your video must have an audio track. Uploads can be up to 200 MiB and 5 minutes.

How to change the speed of a video

Choose a video and type a Speed multiplier. The field starts at 1, which means no change. Submit the form, wait on the status page and download the MP4. The speed appears in the file name, for example -2.0x, so you can keep several versions.

Choosing a multiplier

Values above 1 shorten the video: 2 halves its length and 4 cuts it to a quarter. Values below 1 stretch it: 0.5 doubles the length and 0.25 makes it four times as long. The limits are 0.25 and 4. For slow motion, 0.5 usually looks smoother than 0.25, since no frames are invented between the existing ones.

What happens to the audio

Sound is adjusted to match the new speed, so voices do not turn into chipmunks at 2x. At the extremes, 0.25x or 4x, speech can sound processed. The speed change needs an audio stream in the source file: a silent video can fail. If that is your case, try the Mute Video tool's output with other tools, or add sound elsewhere.

Limits and neighbours

Accepted files are MP4, MOV, AVI, WEBM and MKV, under 200 MiB and no longer than 5 minutes. The result is H.264 video with AAC audio in an MP4. To change speed for only part of a clip, cut it first with Trim Video. To pack a sped-up clip into a looping image, use Video to GIF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I speed up a video?

Upload the video and enter a multiplier above 1, such as 2 for double speed. The tool shortens the clip and speeds up the audio to match. Download the MP4 from the status page when it finishes.

How do I slow down a video?

Enter a multiplier below 1. A value of 0.5 plays at half speed and doubles the length, and the minimum is 0.25. The audio is slowed to match, and you download the result as an MP4.

What speed range is supported?

From 0.25x to 4x. Values outside this range are rejected by the form. For a bigger change, run the output through the tool a second time, keeping in mind that quality drops with each re-encode.

Will the audio sound strange at high speeds?

The pitch is kept near normal, so ordinary speeds sound natural. At 4x or 0.25x, speech and music may sound clipped or stretched. Moderate values between 0.5x and 2x give the cleanest result.

Why did my speed change fail?

The most common reason is a video without an audio track, because the speed filter processes both picture and sound. Other causes are a file over 200 MiB, a video over 5 minutes, or an unsupported extension.
