Add a text watermark to an image

Stamp a diagonal text watermark across an image.

To watermark image files, upload one, type your watermark text (up to 100 characters), choose a position and opacity, and download the marked copy. The text is drawn in white and can sit diagonally across the centre or in any of the four corners. Opacity runs from 5 to 100 percent. This tool adds text only, not a logo image, and it saves the result as a PNG.

How to add a watermark

Choose an image and enter the text, which starts as SAMPLE. Select Center (diagonal), Top left, Top right, Bottom left or Bottom right, and set opacity with the slider (the default is 0.5). Submit and download a file named after the original with -watermarked added. The original stays as it was.

Position and size

A centre watermark is rotated 45 degrees and placed in the middle of the image, which makes it harder to crop out. Corner marks sit 10 pixels from the edges and stay horizontal. Text size is set automatically to about one eighth of the image's shorter side, with a minimum of 20 pixels. You cannot change the font, size or colour.

Visibility and limits

The text is white, so it shows clearly on dark areas and may nearly disappear on a white or very bright background. Raise opacity if it is hard to see, or lower it if it covers the subject. A watermark deters casual reuse but cannot stop someone from cropping or editing it out, particularly a corner mark. Long text can run off the edge of a small image.

Output and related tools

The watermarked image is saved as a PNG, even if you upload a JPG, so the file can be larger. Compress it with the Image Compressor or convert it with the Image Converter before posting. To add a frame around the picture, use Image Border. To mark a document rather than a picture, use Watermark PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Can I add my logo as a watermark?

No. This tool adds text only, up to 100 characters. The text is white and the font is chosen automatically. For a logo watermark you need an editor that can overlay an image.

Where can I place the watermark?

You can choose a diagonal mark across the centre, or one of the four corners: top left, top right, bottom left or bottom right. Corner marks sit 10 pixels from the edge. The centre mark is rotated 45 degrees.

Can I change the watermark colour or font?

No. The text is always white, and the font and size are set automatically based on the image size. You can only change the wording, position and opacity from 5 to 100 percent.

Why can I hardly see my watermark?

The text is white, so it blends into light or white areas of the photo. Increase opacity towards 1.0, choose a position over a darker part of the image, or use a centre mark that crosses several tones.

Will my image stay a JPG after watermarking?

No. The result is saved as a PNG, which keeps the pixels lossless but can be larger than a JPG. Use the Image Compressor or the Image Converter afterwards if you need a smaller or different format.
